The Grease Traps

Funk
8
Vocals, guitar, keys, drums, bass guitar, tenor sax, trumpet, baritone sax
The Grease Traps are an 8-piece funk and soul powerhouse based in Oakland, CA. Featuring a well-oiled rhythm section, tight horns, and stirring vocals by that sharp-dressing, all-around fly dude, The Gata, their musical mix of hard-driving funk and lowdown soul is guaranteed to get your head noddin' and cure your dance jones. The rhythm section takes its cues from the soulful sounds of the MG’s, the Meters, the JB’s, and the classic rhythm sections of the Atlantic, Hi and Fame labels. In addition to their original material, the Traps are crate diggers as well, breathing new life into lost grooves culled from rare funk 45’s and obscure oft-sampled records.
They released their debut 45 single on the well-respected funk & soul label, Colemine Records. Their first full-length album, Solid Ground, was recorded all-analog on their trusty Tascam 388 and put out by one of Europe's premier soul labels, Record Kicks. They have played at numerous California festivals (Stern Grove, For The Funk Of It, Off The Grid, Potrero Hill R&B Festival, Soup) and some of the greater Bay Area's best venues (The Independent, The Chapel, Moe’s Alley, New Parish) sharing the stage with touring acts such as the Commodores, Shuggie Otis, Rebirth Brass Band, Monophonics, Neal Francis, Orgone, and Durand Jones among many others.

Once upon a time, under an ol' Oak tree at Doc's house...
The Live Oaks band began in the hills of Oakland in 2016. In the backyard of a legendary doctor's home. Our friend "Doc" was a pioneer of free health clinics in San Francisco in the 60's-70's and also happened to be a lover of rock & roll. He even had Jerry Garcia as a friend and patient. He was widowed and chronically ill later in his life and preferred the company of musicians, so he took us in.
He provided a roof over our heads.
He let musicians live at his home for free as long as there was music and some good cookin'. He took care of us, and we took care of him. We danced and dreamed about rock & roll. It gave us hope. It gave the house in which we called "Bagshotte" life again. We sang for Doc, we wrote for Doc, we brought the best musicians we knew over to the house to jam for Doc. A lot of our songs were written at his house in the hills. That was 9 years ago when we first moved in. He even purchased us an acoustic Martin guitar that we still use on stage to this day. But after years of battling cancer, he is gone now and has since passed away.
But since then we have not stopped writing music and refining our live show and recording processes. We have done it all. Toured in shitty vans up and down the West Coast over many years (the vans improved eventually), playing for our friends and in small venues. But lately the venue sizes are starting increase as well as our organic fan base. We really believe in word of mouth not social media app bullshit ran by billionaires. We believe in putting on a very good show, writing good songs and the rest will take care of itself. We have played dozens of small festivals, hundreds of shows, and on occasion welcome the corporate music thing but lately are really focusing on writing, recording and releasing more of our songs. Like Doc always cheered after we played him a song,
"we're gonna be famous!" - We would love to come play, thanks for considering us, we now live in Richmond, CA 94806

Trumpet, Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Drums (sometimes Keys, sometimes flute)
“This is Soul for today: tight, sophisticated, and up-to-date...a winner" (San Diego Troubadour). Tori Roze and The Hot Mess are a soulful force to be reckoned with. Gathering their musical thunder from an extremely eclectic time and space spanning centuries, this band busts straight through the glass ceiling of genre-bending: original funky jazzy neo-soul music exploding with grit, integrity, and vulnerability. Roze is a key artist in conveying the emotional intent behind a song. "Hearing Tori Roze's sultry voice for the first time is like learning that Santa Claus isn't real: it absolutely breaks your heart. Roze seduces you with her Erykah Badu-esque flair, and just when you think she can't be any smoother, she claws her way into your ears with her rocking roars" (San Diego City Beat). The Hot Mess, composed of exceptional "pocket" players nailing unexpected arrangements to “blow your top,” leaves you reeling with toe-tapping excitement. The name says it all: The Hot Mess. Do not expect for their arrangements to be predictable or run-of-the-mill – this band is audibly unique. Musically likened to Chicago + Earth, Wind, and Fire with a slap of Amy Winehouse + Janis Joplin-style vocals; these guys have got the recipe for eargasmic pleasure.
